Full Details

This Grade II Listed 16th century detached longhouse with fabulous views is situated in the Dartmoor National Park, close to the lovely town of Chagford & Castle Drogo. The house is granite under thatch, with the B&B wing being under slate.

The accommodation includes eight en-suite bedrooms in total, with four spacious reception rooms, plus a commercial style kitchen with an attached utility room. The original house has many fantastic character features including wonderful fireplaces, exposed beams and beautiful doors. The library, containing books with links to the hotel, and main living room are great examples and ceiling heights are good throughout. There is also mains gas central heating.

The library contains an original book collection collated by the Hotel in the 1930's and 40's and carefully maintained by the current owner, along with original guest books with guests from its history including the Waugh brothers, Richard Widmark and John Steinbeck.

Outside we find formal gardens in front of the original house (south-facing circa. 15m x 14m) and the more recent ‘B&B wing’ with lawns extending to approximately 40m x 18m with wonderful far reaching views to enjoy. There is also a wild garden with fish pond beyond. From the road is a large parking bay, plus parking for around 8 cars (15.7m x 8.4m) within the walled perimeter.

This detached cottage is a surprisingly spacious home and has full residential use of its own. There are three bedrooms, a large living room and kitchen diner, plus a conservatory. Outside it has an enclosed garden with hot tub and electric sauna, plus parking for 3-4 cars with a separate access to the hotel, and an open fronted double garage plus store.

This residential property was formally a hotel for around 80 years and was owned in the 1920s to early 1960s by an American lady (Carolyn Cobb) and her associate (Norman Webb). Mrs Cobb was very well known in literary circles and a number of well-known artistic types came to stay. Alec Waugh was a regular visitor and introduced his younger brother Evelyn Waugh to the hotel, which then became a regular haunt for him to write. He completed Black Mischief here in April 1932, A Handful of Ashes in 1934 and indeed checked in on 31st January 1944 to start work on his best-known novel Brideshead Revisited which he completed in June of that year. Other notables include Patrick Leigh Fermor, who wrote The Traveller's Tree here, the novelists CP Snow and John Steinbeck, and the poet John Betjeman.

The property is situated about 1.5 miles to the east of Chagford, not far from Castle Drogo, and in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park. Chagford is one of Dartmoor's most popular small market towns. Centred around its attractive square, it possesses an excellent range of local facilities, including shops, parish church, primary school, doctors and dentists surgeries, pubs, hotel and restaurant. There are also many active clubs and societies, including football and cricket pitch, bowling club, tennis club and an open air swimming pool. There is easy access from Chagford to the A30 dual carriageway, leading west to Cornwall and east to the university and cathedral city of Exeter, where there is access to the M5 motorway, stations with mainline rail connections to London, and an international airport.
