The alarm went off before dawn, the sort of hour when only farmers, insomniacs and estate agents with something big ahead are awake. Outside, the Devon streets were still dark, a thin mist hanging in the air. The 6:30 train rolled out on time, our little group clutching coffees as if they were survival gear.
There’s something about leaving the calm of Devon and watching the world wake up through the train window that makes you both excited and slightly nervous. The hills give way to fields, the fields to suburbs, and then suddenly you’re looking at the skyline of London, taller, louder and busier than anything you left behind.
This wasn’t just any work trip. It was EA Masters 2026, the biggest event in the UK estate agency calendar. The place where the best in the business gather, compare notes and secretly hope to hear their name called from the stage.
Paddington, taxis and the bright lights of Battersea
By the time we stepped off the train at Paddington, caffeine levels were peaking and so was the anticipation. London hits you fast, the noise, the pace, the price of coffee. We bundled into a taxi that threaded through Hyde Park and along the Thames, taking in just enough of the city’s landmarks to feel we were somewhere important.
When we arrived at Evolution London in Battersea Park, the scale of it hit us. A huge glass and steel space filled with the chatter of agents from every corner of the UK. You could almost feel the collective mix of pride and nerves in the air. The morning sessions were all about the future of agency, leadership, service and technology, delivered by speakers who somehow made it sound easy.
Lunch came and went. The conversations softened. Everyone knew what was next.
The wait
By late afternoon, the plates were cleared, the lights dimmed and the murmur of a thousand conversations settled into quiet expectation. Kirsty Gallacher took the stage, a familiar smile under the spotlight, ready to announce the Gold winners one by one.
The names came slowly. Each one followed by cheers, applause and camera flashes. Every pause that was not us stretched a little longer. You try to stay cool, but the truth is everyone’s heart rate creeps up as the list shortens.
Then, finally:
“For outstanding marketing, service and results…Helmores.”
For a second, nothing. Then our table exploded. Andy, Jo, George and Jamie were up and heading for the stage, greeted by Kirsty and handed our award beneath the bright lights. A quick handshake, a photo, a moment to take it all in.
Gold for Sales and Lettings. The double win. The thing you secretly hope for but never quite expect.
Why this one matters
The EA Masters Awards are not the kind you apply for or buy your way into. Every estate agency in the UK is automatically assessed through the Best Estate Agent Guide, using independent data, mystery shopping and marketing performance.
Every photo, floorplan and property listing is reviewed. Response times are tested. Service is scored. It is detailed, fair and unforgiving. Only the top few percent nationwide walk away with Gold.
That is what makes it special. It is not luck or clever words, it is months of hard work, consistency and care, all quietly noticed by someone with a clipboard.
From stage lights to street lights
After the photos came a collective sigh of relief and a few wobbly smiles. The weight of waiting had gone. Conversations turned to laughter and someone suggested a drink. London obliged, as it always does. We ended up in a small bar somewhere near the river, still half in disbelief, glasses clinking over the noise of the crowd.
The journey back the next day felt different. Tired, yes, but content. There is a particular satisfaction in bringing something like that home to Devon, a reminder that small-town service can hold its own against anyone.
Thank you
To our brilliant team across Sales, Lettings, Marketing and Support, thank you. Every early start, every call, every extra bit of care is what got us here. And to our clients, thank you for trusting us with your homes. These awards might have our name on them, but they belong to all of you.
From the first coffee at dawn to the last toast under London’s lights, it was a day none of us will forget.
If you are thinking of selling or letting, we would love to show you the same dedication that earned these Golds.
